The Legacy of Inspiration

Dear Dennis,
Your family is ok. They all miss you but they are doing as well as can be expected. Emily and I made arrangements for our kids so we could be there for them. It's a very odd reality that you are gone. The stories that people are sharing all surround your love for swimming, cycling and fitness. You have touched so many people's lives that the stories will go on and on.

It's hard to believe that I have known you since I was five years old. I remember you being the swim coach. I remember you cycling to and from Dobie high school every day. I always thought you were cool because you were listening to the latest music while tinkering with the green van out in the garage. We were just in that garage today unloading your things that were in boxes.

Scott is doing a triathlon on Monday. I have no doubt that you will be with him. I was reading over all your stats again from all the records that you have held. When we do get together to celebrate your life it's going to be packed with people whose lives you have influenced and inspired. Who knows, maybe some of us will end up doing a triathlon in your memory.

#Mamavation Monday - Counting Calories

Mamavation

There is still time to vote! TOP 50 Most Inspirational Healthy Tweeps! #Top50HT Would you like your vote to count? Click here. For more details check my side bar.

I'm not a fan of counting calories or keeping a food journal. The MyFitnessPal.com is a great tool but I'm having a hard time seeing the point for me. Why? I am struggling with the same range of numbers I started out the year with and it's frustrating. Some days I still eat like crap but I'm within my calorie range. I went to dinner with a group of women. One was doing weight watchers and the others were doing some point system that I couldn't keep up with and to be honest it was a little frustrating. The enjoyment of a meal has just been broken down in numbers and it's no longer fun to go out and eat. There is more worry to it than anything else,  at least for this group. There has to be some balance some where. Right?

My #MorningMile is still going strong. Although I did take a break on Sunday just to catch up on rest again this week. You can read how I started the #MorningMile over here.  This weeks video has to do with a new challenge that I'm working on. Hope you enjoy the beats. It's Day 29 for the #100DayBurpeeChallenge if you wanna know what's it's like click on the link to read my journey so far. And here it is......the same gallon of water.
I still have yet to finish this gallon of water! STILL

The UP side- Only one party left. I'm training for the Beach Palooza and have a 5K coming up. I hit a few personal records this week at Crossfit! My dead lifts are 195 pounds and my box squat was 215 pounds. What?! What?! Amazing!!

In February this is me dead lifting 95 lbs.

6 months later this is 195 lbs.

A bit of inspiration for you ladies!

Debt Free - Part 2

Now that we are debt free, all but the house, we teach and spread the word of Dave Ramsey in our local church. Our Financial Peace University class is starting in September. As facilitators we were invited to a luncheon hosted at Tallowood Baptist Church. Big B's Bar B-Q catered the event. It was fabulous! Sliced beef brisket, bbq chicken, seasoned green beans, baked beans, potato salad, dinner rolls, peach cobbler, bottled water, sweet tea and coffee were served. YUMMY!!!!!!!!

It turns out Dave is coming to Houston 10-08-2011 to the Reliant Arena. Yes, we bought tickets. It's always great to have a refresher and Dave Ramsey has a lot of passion about what he does. When I last left you in February we were going to try to call on a Friday but we never did make it. My husband went out of town and we just never made it. Maybe we can tell him in person when we go to the show.

Here are some follow up answers to some things that I have been asked since becoming debt free.

1.) Do we still use the envelopes? YES! Every single month we still have a budget meeting and we use the cash. We plan better for the birthdays, holidays, taxes and big things that are waiting for us around the corner.

2.) What's it like to be debt free? It's WEIRD. I have to be honest. We really want to pay our house off. We want to owe NOTHING!

3.) Are we able to give more? YES! We are but we give carefully. With some people you can't manage money problems with more money. It's important to understand the entire process or you will end up right back where you were before you got out of debt.

4.) Can you sign up for the class again? YES! Once you have taken the class you are a life time member. Go back for a refresher at any time. Even if you need a little boost or some group support.

I have heard some people say that they have tried Ramsey and just couldn't live off of cash. They had to use their debit cards. OK - everyone is different but being out of debt is the best solution.

The world is NOT set up for cash. It does work but if you take a look at your medical system or your local stores they just aren't equipped to deal with cash. Just because you pay with cash it doesn't mean you are poor! Just saying. We get that a lot at the doctor's office. We get cash discounts! It's true.

Do we still fight about money? YES but not in a bad way. We just argue about what to do with the LEFT OVER money each month. That is totally different!

We still have our bag of cut up credit cards handy. We will never forget what it was like in September of 2009. We honestly look at each other and wonder how we ever made it! If you have any questions at all please feel free to ask me!

#Parenting - What's That Sound?

That is the sound of thousands of parents cheering on the 1st Day of School! Whoo Hoo!!!! My two boys are both in the same school. Little Miss Silly right there had her back pack on but she's not old enough to attend yet. Soon little one...soon.
First we dropped off our little guy. He's turning a whole five years old tomorrow! His sister sat down next to him and started breaking into the school supplies that were marked for someone else. She didn't understand why she couldn't stay there.
Next we dropped our oldest off to his class. Again his sister didn't understand why she couldn't stay with him either. We left with a very upset three year old. Like most parents out there I was worried about how their first day would go. Yes, I'm cheering because I'm down to one child but at the same time 2pm arrives quickly! You just never know what's going to happen or if they will like their classmates and teachers.
Of course I was worried for nothing. They both had a great day! The oldest was holding little brother's hand on the way home. He wasn't happy about me taking a photo of it either. lol - Oh well. I'm a Mom and it's part of the code! Must take photos at every cute opportunity. :)

Thank you...Thank you....I'm so honored to be one of the many nominees for TOP 50 Most Inspirational Healthy Tweeps! #Top50HT  I was amazed to see my name on the list. It's always an honor to inspire people to live healthier lives. I'm glad we get to vote for 10 people at a time. I have lots of favorite nominees that inspire me too! Would you like your vote to count? Click here. For more details check my side bar.

I did it! I'm food journaling and compiling it all into MyFitnessPal.com as of Wednesday. I'm trying to become more aware of my calorie intake without becoming obsessed! The system is only good for tracking calorie burn for cardio workouts. I do a lot of strength training so the calorie burn doesn't calculate correctly for me. After going over my numbers with my super awesome trainer I have a plan of attack. I know what numbers I have to stay within in order to meet my goals.

My 28 Day Health Challenge is over. I feel recharged, detoxed and ready to go!  My #MorningMile is still going strong. Although I did take a break on Sunday just to catch up on rest I might have missed during the week. You can read how I did that over here.  This weeks video is selected to tickle your funny bone! 28-Day Health Challenge by Vitamark

A new day, a new challenge. My work out buddies turned me on to this 28-Day Health Challenge. I get to "Detox. Recharge." Rebuild a better me! Score, I'm in. I love a good challenge and if this is going to help me from the inside out I'm going for it. I got my box of goodies on my doorstep about 30 minutes ago and I can't wait to get started. I'll keep you updated on my progress and let you know what I think here on this post!

Let me start by saying that I am already a customer of  the VitaOne and Crave products. Within a few days of taking the VitaOne packets I noticed a difference. I felt better and my nails were getting longer. The Crave packets were easy, tear, pour in my water, shake and go! Tons of much needed energy. Later on I started taking the Coral Calcium for stronger bones.

My package comes with these products, a check off chart to keep me on track for the full 28 days, a Day 1 questionnaire and a Day 28 questionnaire to track my progress. I'm ready to get started.

Day 1 - Completed questionnaire responding to reasons for taking the challenge. Those that apply to me are: optimal health, improve athletic performance, stress management, mood improvement, better focus/mental energy, stamina and improvement in the aging process.

General wellness average
Quality of sleep low
Stress tolerance low
Digestion quality average
Energy Levels average
Overall Focus low
Quality of mood average

These answers are based on my continuing to heal from my incision. It's a slow process keeping me from being able to work out at my full potential. That's a bit frustrating. My husband is about to leave for a week for work and that puts my stress tolerance at a low level with three kids. Although I do have high hopes of healing, detoxing and recharging! I'm ready for optimal health.
First up! VitaMarin capsule (2xs) & 1 bottle of Limu plus mini, packet of VitaOne and Crave. Let's go!

Day 2 - Same dose different day. I'm not sure if I can tell a huge difference yet. It is also possible that I took 2 VitaMarins last night because I had one of those, did I take that already moments? I couldn't remember so I took one. I still have no idea but I doubt it's going to hurt me. Today I was an organizing machine maybe it is working already! lol - I also ventured out and tried my first Paleo recipe, sweet potato and bacon salad. Yummy!

Day 3 - Same dose or was it? I might have taken 2 packs of VitaOne because I couldn't remember if I took it during lunch time or not so I took it at night just in case. Clearly I have memory issues. Today was blood donation day at our local church. I have trouble with iron and some times if my count is not high enough I can't donate. Today I was able to without a problem so that is a plus! I attempted another Paleo recipe (this time for pork chops) but I didn't have all the ingredients and all of the instructions didn't print out. lol - Welcome to my world.

Day 4 - Note to self: You wouldn't have to worry about taking double doses of anything if you just keep up with the checklist you were given. That is all. :)

Day 5 - Loving the chilled Limu! I take my VitaMarin with it! My blood donation results came back. I'm 3 points higher in my cholesterol level than my last donation but my blood pressure is way down! That's great news. I'm feeling really good! Something you might notice during this challenge would be the color of your urine. Warning! It's going to change colors. I'm guessing that is how you will know it's really working. lol

Day 6 - Staying health conscious on this challenge and hunting for more Paleo recipes. It's tough because a lot of the ingredients aren't part of my every day use. I need to hunt for these things at the grocery store. I need  to get better at meal planning. I'm back to my Rx during my Crossfit work outs. I'm feeling really good and healing from surgery nicely. Only two more days of the same doses and then we get to mix it up again.

Day 7 - Still going strong with the challenge and keeping up with the check list now! lol

Day 8 - I'm on my last Limu Plus Mini - Boo! I really love these little bottles because they are so easy to just grab and go. It's time to put my bottle of Limu Plus in the refrigerator to chill. I like them cold personally.

Day 9 - Fell off the wagon yesterday and today with my eating habits. It's really disappointing but I'm not dwelling on it. My 2 week work out challenge with Drill Sargent Daniel Aralik is over. I have a lot of things to check off on my list. I didn't have any packets of Crave today. That might be the energy that I'm missing today.

Day 10 - I'm really missing those little bottles of Limu. Busy day today so I opened up a packet of Crave and got so much accomplished! Feeling good.

Day 11 - 14 Feeling great! Lots of energy and recharging. I'm really excited to see what day 28 is going to feel like.

Day 15 - Super excited about the new Facebook Contest! Everyone is showing off their photos. It's not too late to start the challenge.

Day 16 - Powered up with some Limu this morning right before the 5K. Feeling refreshed. Wish I could have gotten more sleep though. The kids were playing musical beds.

Day 17 - Day 28 Challenge is complete! Let's check in with the rating scale on my assessment.

General wellness average to excellent
Quality of sleep low to excellent
Stress tolerance low to average
Digestion quality average to excellent
Energy Levels average to excellent
Overall Focus low to excellent
Quality of mood average to excellent

Now those are results that I was NOT expecting. I have made lots of changes in my diet, exercise and morning routines. Could these also be variables that play a part in my better assessment? Sure! Change is great. I know that I'm doing great things for my body. I do feel recharged. Love the check list, the products and the evaluations. What a challenge! It was hard to stay on track with the mid day vitamins but all in all I was able to remain on track. Would I recommend it to my friends? You bet! I would also recommend changes in diet, exercise and creating new routines. Thank you Vitamark for putting together a great package.

This is not a compensated post by Vitamark. I am journaling my personal experience with their products during this challenge. #Wordless Wednesday - Princess Rings

We went to pick out her 3 year old birthday cake for Friday. She found these princess cupcakes topped with these rings. She wouldn't put them down and I'm a sucker for a princess! She was having a blast putting them all on her fingers. Notice how her big brother had to get in on the action? lol - Anything for his baby sister.

The Barter System

What happened to all my "Happy Panda" inventory? The majority of it went to Ed. We go to the same church and he also owns his own flower shop! What a great idea it was to give him all my supplies that have been sitting in storage. All the ribbon, gift wrapping supplies, custom tissue paper, paci-plushies, tees, onesies and more.

In exchange he told me that I could have a year to send out flowers for different occasions that come up for my friends and family. The other day, I decided that I need the flowers! I love the smell and the colors of a fresh bouquet. I stopped by his shop and asked him if he could just send me the flowers. After all I could always use some cheering up. He really liked the idea.

This past weekend I sold my heat press and quickbooks POS system in a yard sale. All for a steal of $612.00. OUCH! It was on Craigslist and people inquired but this gentleman showed up with his very pregnant wife and two young girls. He's just starting out his custom t-shirt business. Good luck to him because as a fellow entrepreneur I gave him the blessing of a lifetime and he knew it. I wish him well and I hope that he has more success with that equipment than I did. And that is the very end of my adventure with my online business. What's next? Who knows. I had to close that door in order for another to open.

Flipping The Switch

During the #RunHades challenge something really cool happened. I killed 4 birds with one stone. That's right! I'm a former night owl turned "Morning Person." How did I do it? During the #Runhades challenge I chose to log one mile a day when I wasn't running a 5K. Near the very end because of the heat I decided that mile would be in the morning before anyone got up out of bed. I set my phone alarm for 6am and then set a back up alarm for 6:30am. I would wake up, roll out of bed, get dressed, drive to the track and get one mile of running, jogging or walking in all before consuming any caffeine. The back up alarm would go off while I was at the track so this really helped me to make sure I was right on schedule. It wasn't easy at first but doing it three days in a row formed a habit. I was back before anyone was awake and I was on this sort of natural high. It was awesome. I didn't need that caffeine fix to function first thing in the morning. My body was doing everything for me. I was able to run the mornings in our home like a well oiled machine. The second week I set my alarm for 5:30am and set my back up alarm for 6am. The kids start school soon so if I want to get my half hour in I have to get up even earlier. So far it's working! Did I mention that I'm going to bed earlier too? I'm actually managing to get 8 hours of sleep. I feel like a whole new person!

If you would like to try flipping your switch try this:
Figure out the best time in the morning to get your one mile run, jog or walk in.
Set those alarms!
Roll out of bed, get dressed and get your 1 mile in. Whether you need to drive to a track or just do it in your neighborhood.
Arm yourself with water.
WARM UP before you take off. I'm inserting the Lunge Matrix video as your warm up.

Lunge Warm-Up from CoachJayJohnson on Vimeo. Thanks to Abe Cortes for this tip!

If you can run it will really get you hopping in the morning.
If you can jog it will still get you going.
If you have to walk, then walk fast. It's the speed that kicks you into high gear.
This should take no more than 30 minutes including your warm up.
Try it for 2 weeks and let me know if it flipped your switch!
